Season 03 Episode 06: Devops and Performance

As with the last episode, we filmed the introduction segment at Bryte Payment Solutions in Jacksonville Florida. You might notice the opening sponsor “thank you” looks different from the previous couple of episodes. We used different cameras and the background changed. Over time, we are refining the filming process to make it look better and better.

Will Zuill

I know Will from a previous life as CEO of Northway Solutions Group (a HP Software Partner based out of Nashville). We go back together almost a decade. I would work with Will on pre-sales and he would be a frequent guest for the local user group meetings we would host. I love how animated Will gets when he speaks. It resonates with his passion for a topic. Over the last few years, he has focused on the software development lifecycle – watching what works and doesn’t work. There is a lot of hype these days around DevOps and the Site Reliability Engineer (SRE), and I wanted to break through some of that in this episode. The interview was filmed in Nashville at the home offices of 180 Health Partners. I am very appreciative to Justin Lanning, Eldon Fields, and Travis Briles for allowing us to use their facility.

Technically Dumb

We filmed the “Technically Dumb” skit using the green screen studio at Bryte. This is an obvious parody of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” song. I wanted to convey how difficult “technospeak” has gotten these days. It was always bad, but trying to keep up with the pace of change is now over the top. It seems if one isn’t familiar with every single new company and their library/framework/API, you are out of the loop. We used to have years to acclimate to new terms and technology. Now it is months. That is what the lyrics reflect, just from trying to fix a simple password issue.

Thank you Dave Humphrey and everyone at Bryte. As a result of the great results with these productions, I’ll be doing future filming work at this facility. Bryte is an official sponsor of my weekly podcast (SMCJOURNAL.COM).

All of the amazing music you hear on this song (including the vocals) was performed and mixed by JR McNeeley. When we were recording this, many on the production team thought it was a Pink Floyd track without the vocals. It was not. It was completely re-recorded from the ground up. This shows you the kind of effort we are making to have the show raise the bar for technology-based parodies.

Thanks – Episode 06

That’s a wrap on Episode 06! None of this would have happened without all the people who pitched in to help, as well as our awesome sponsors, Tricentis and QA Consultants. Thanks to all of you.
